Title: The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread
Author: DiCamillo, Kate

Winner of this year's Newbery Award for the best writing DiCamillo created a wonderful character in Despereaux, a mouse who faints at loud noises, but who has the courage to face the evil rat, Roscuro. Children and adults of all ages will be enjoying this book for years to come.
Title: Olive's Ocean
Author: Henkes, Kevin

One of this year's Newbery Honor books, Olive's Ocean (recommended for middle school), tells of how one girl learns to know Olive only after her death, through words from her journal.
Title: An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793
Author: Murphy, Jim
Publisher: Clarion Books 2003
Jim Murphy has written numerous award-winning non-fiction books for children, and this year's Newbery's Honor book is outstanding. Murphy is respected for his solidly researched and action packed real life stories. He goes into great detail about the epidemic as it spread through the city of Philadelphia just after the colonies won their independence from Britain. It concludes with a discussion of today's medical research and treatment of such outbreaks, and the potential for new epidemics.
Title: The Man Who Walked Between Two Towers
Author: Gerstein, Mordicai

Based on the true story of the Frenchman who actually walked between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, this book won the 2003 Caldecott Award for best illustration in a children's book. The pictures are extraordinary, and the tale all the more poignant because of 9-11. Gerstein is an artist who lives within view of the World Trade Center.
