Title: Baa-Choo!
Author: Weeks, Sarah
Publisher: Harper Collins 2004
For ages 6-9. Sam the lamb can't quite finish his sneeze and that is a problem his friends are only too happy to help him with. This delightfully funny easy reader rhymes its way to Sam's big sneeze-ending joke.
Title: I Ain't Gonna Paint No More!
Author: Beaumont, Karen
Publisher: Harcourt 2005
For ages 3-6. This wacky book is creatively illustrated by cartoonist David Catrow, and can be sung to the tune of the old folk song "It Ain't Gonna Rain No More." Wildly swinging from a nearly colorless world to a glorious mess, this romp is sure to get kids giggling and rhyming as they guess what outrageous canvas will be next.
Title: Not Norman: A Goldfish Story
Author: Bennet, Kelly
Publisher: Candlewick Press 2005
For ages 3-6. A boy is disappointed when he gets a goldfish for a pet instead of a dog or cat, and decides he will trade him after talking him up at school. As the day wears on, however, Norman swims his way right into his owner's heart.
Title: The Giant Hug
Author: Horning, Sandra
Publisher: Random House 2005
For ages 3-6. Owen wants to send his Granny a giant hug for her birthday, but how will he get it to her? The postal service is delightfully illustrated by Valeric Gorbachev as a variety of animals (including a prickly porcupine), but the premise of passing along a hug and its consequences gives this story a sweetly atypical plot.
Title: Once Upon a Cloud
Author: Walker, Rob D.
Publisher: Blue Sky Press 2005
For ages 3-6. Clouds are depicted as everything from cotton candy for giants to cushions for birds in this gentle, rhythmic exploration of what clouds might be. Matt Ma-hurin does a wonderful job illus- trating the imaginative questions posed, such as "Are clouds mashed potatoes? That sure would be great. They would drop from the sky and land on my plate."
