Title: The Salem Witch Trials: An Unsolved Mystery from History Author: Yolen, Jane Publisher: Simon & Schuster Young Readers 2005 Renowned storyteller Yolen poses as many questions as she answers about the disturbing events of 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. Combined with illustrations by her daughter, the facts are presented and discussed, and at the end, several theories are put forth about the behavior of the girls who started the panic. Lots of historical background is included.
Title: Hotel Deep: Light Verse from Dark Water Author: Cyrus, Kurt Publisher: Harcourt 2005 Kurt Cyrus’ poems take the reader through the oceans, describing the creatures that live in the deep, and their surroundings. The words flow through the illustrations to give a true feeling of rising and falling tides, and rolling waves.
Title: The Journey of the One and Only Declaration of Independence Author: St. George, Judith Publisher: Philomel Books 2005 Everyone knows that the Declaration of Independence was created in 1776, but do you know where that original document is stored? Or the road it took to get there? This light-hearted story with winsome illustrations describes the birth of our nation and the lengths people have gone to in order to protect the most important document in the world.
Title: The Flag with Fifty six Stars Author: Rubin, Susan Goldman Publisher: Holiday House 2005 The Holocaust was a very dark period in the world’s history, and Mauthausen was one of the worst concentration camps in Europe. When word spread that the Nazi guards were fleeing and the American soldiers were coming to free them, a group of prisoners decided to create a special gift for those rescuers who risked their lives to save them. The somber realistic illustrations reflect the serious topic, but there is a bit of light in each to show the hope that lived in each person.
Title: Prehistoric Actual Size Author: Jenkins Jenkins, Steve Publisher: Houghton Mifflin 2005 We all know that most dinosaurs were huge, and many insects and rodents were also very large. This picture book contains drawings of many creatures in their actual size. For the huge dinosaurs, only a small portion of their body is drawn. Many dinosaurs were very small, and some of these are also included. This is a fascinating look at how big (or small!) these prehistoric creatures really were.
