Title: Baby Shoes
Author: Slater, Daschka
Publisher: Bloomsbury 2006
Ages 2-6
Every mother knows what happens to new shoes when they adorn the feet of a toddler, especially those that start out white. This bright book makes the inevitable journey toward "anything but white" shoes a joyful adventure. Little ones will undoubtedly join the baby's repeating refrain of "Uh-Oh!" and mama's answering "Oh, No!" as each color is added to the shoes. Loads of fun!
Title: A Beautiful Girl
Author: Schwartz, Amy
Publisher: Roaring Brook Press 2006
Ages 3-6
Jenna meets various animals who declare that she is rather silly looking for an elephant, a robin, a fly and a goldfish. She patiently explains how she uses her own nose, mouth, eyes and ears. A beautiful girl indeed!
Title: Tugga-Tugga Tugboat
Author: Lewis, Kevin
Publisher: Hyperion Books for Children 2006
Ages 3-6
"Tugga-tugga tugboat, grab and guide and float, boat." Lewis' rhythmic text accompanies colorful illustrations by Daniel Kirk that reveal a tugboat at work in what appears to be a busy seaport. Sharp readers will notice signs that the players in this drama are "smaller than life" as the story unfolds. This book is fun to read and fun to look at again and again.
Title: I'm Bored!
Author: Schneider, Christine
Publisher: Clarion Books 2006
Ages 4-8
In response to the scourge of childhood, Charlie decides to fight back--literally. Hervé Pinel's illustrations gradually morph from shades of grey to a bright palette of colors as Charlie battles the foe "boredom" with imagination and panache. Curios family members join Charlie in a satisfying yet far from saccharine ending. A great book for sharing on a "grey" day!
Title: Do Lions Live on Lily Pads?
Author: Walsh, Melanie
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin 2006
Ages 2-4
This delightfully interactive book offers plenty of opportunities for giggles. Bright, simple illustrations depict a goat high in a nest, a parakeet in a fish bowl and a guinea pig hanging from a web among other other oddly out-of-place creatures. The guessing game here is not where the animal shown really lives, but who really lives in the habitat shown. Just right for the youngest readers.
